Whitney Thompson; Plus-size supermodel, spokesperson for NEDA and creator of "Supermodel".

My goal is to encourage and inspire you to celebrate your miraculous, exquisite, and unique body. I want you to resist the negative messages being sold to you by the media. You are beautiful. You are unique. Here, we want to help you remember that.

If I can convey one message to you:
Healthy is Beautiful. Beautiful is not a size, not an age, and not a procedure. Healthy is beautiful."

“Beautiful” is celebrating the characteristics and qualities of your body, while nourishing and exercising
it to be as uniquely healthy and fit as only you can be. We are all created differently and I want you to stop trying to fit into a mold that someone else has defined as "beautiful". No one size will ever be accepted by everyone and it's important to accept that we are all different. I want you to be the best that you can be.

Your comments are welcome here, even if we don't agree. I appreciate all comments as long as they don't hurt others.

Always remember, life is too short to not live like a SuperModel!

8/18/10 Model Life...and Then Some

I went shopping with Hayley Hassellhoff at Torrid and did a little thing for EXTRA which you can see on TV tonight at 7pm eastern time or on Extra.com. She is such a sweet girl! It’s really easy to forget that she’s only 17. Models can be so rude but Hayley was bubbly and fun all day, to everyone. Plus, we have matching Mercedes. I really hope that her show, “Huge” on ABC Family does well. It’s set at a “fat” camp and shows teens struggling to accept their bodies. When I first heard about the show, I was super skeptical. I didn’t want people putting down curvy people and making fun of us, but after reading the script, I see that the show is the polar opposite. I really encourage you to check it out. I haven’t actually seen the show yet, but it’s getting really great reviews and I’m happy to support shapely girls on television.
Speaking of curvy girls on TV, what happened to Sara Rue? I really liked her before she joined Jenny Craig and lost all of that weight. I could understand if she had wanted to drop ten pounds to feel healthier but she just kept going and now she’s super skinny, but I don’t feel like she’s as beautiful. She had such a fantastic, full face and now I think she sort of looks like a witch. Everything is so linear on her body. I hope she puts a little back on.
I am really sick of celebrities joining weight loss brands. I wish they would put their price next to the diet that they “use”. If we knew that a company had paid Kim Kardashian a million dollars to say that she used their diet pill, but all they really did was give her a personal trainer and put her on a strict diet, then people would probably be less likely to follow suit because they would know that the endorsement is a total lie.
The diet industry is such a joke. Jennifer Hudson is now “eating Jenny Craig”, but Jenny Craig is probably paying for a personal chef to cook all of her meals and have her trained twice a day, not to mention giving her a boat load of cash to say that she used them. People don’t realize that we have a billion dollar diet industry working against our self esteem. There is always a new product out selling us happiness if we “finally” shed those pounds. I don’t believe in that. I will never endorse a diet company. I have turned down offers before and I will continue to do so. If you want to change your body, then eat whole foods and get more cardio. However, I think that it is important for people to learn to love their bodies, regardless of shape or weight before they make the decision to change it. I don’t think that people are mentally prepared to lose weight until they first accept their body the way that it is instead of comparing it to the models and celebrities who miraculously have no cellulite, wrinkles, or imperfections thanks to air brushing. I wish that America would outlaw airbrushing. It would make models an elite group again, instead of an industry babbling with sex tape scandal, turned famous “spokesmodels” that would never get signed on looks alone. I’m over it. If a model can’t take a good photo without being airbrushed then they shouldn’t be a model. Then, people would see that models are real women with flaws and I think that everyone’s self-confidence would benefit.
Not to get completely off topic but I flew to Toronto today and there was an article in my AmericanWay magazine about a singer from Jacksonville, Florida (my home town). His name is John “JJ” Grey and I’ve never heard of him, but I’m always proud of my fellow Jacksonvillians and I’m definitely going to get my hands on some of his music. My next thought on the matter was, “Why am I not in AmericanWay” magazine? I practically live on an airplane and I always read the plane magazines (SkyMall excluded) and see all of these celebrities, models, up and coming artists and I have no idea how they booked that gig. LOL I don’t imagine it would pay much, but I think that it would be so fun!
Alright, I’m off to bed. I just had an amazing dinner at “The Spoke” (scallop ceviche with pink grapefruit and coconut crusted catfish!) and even though the Hilton accidentally gave away my suite, I’m too tired to care. I have such a busy day tomorrow! I’ll be doing a Canadian talk show in the morning and hair and make up gets to my hotel at 6 am! After the talk show, I have a photo shoot all day and a bunch of other interviews. I’m going to need some super fresh coffee...a lot of it.  XoxoX   :-)

  1. Whitney, You are an inspiration to all of us Ample women out there. I am quite a bit older than you, but it is still difficult to go out in this world when people are so skinny minded. I hate that my son has to hear the comments that are made about how they wouldn't go out if they were like me and that is disgusting! I am a beautiful woman with Multiple Sclerosis and have limited mobility so moving is hard for me at times. I love who I am and at 198 and 5'7", I am not disgusting to look at in fact I have a wonderful hourglass shape. Thank you so much for speaking out against the negative infuences towards larger people. You are one beautiful woman inside and out.

  2. A friend of mine was just paid to do a commercial for a weight loss product that SHE DIDN'T EVEN USE. She lost 70lbs the right way - with diet and exercise - but she needed the money and all she had to do was LIE and say she used their products. I was so pissed because, me, at 217lbs, have wasted so much time and money on these products!

  3. @Kathleen My mother has MS! People never understand what a painful and difficult disease it is to live with. My mother gained weight too when she was diagnosed. I am so sorry. Also, I can relate to your son. Being the child of someone with MS is really hard, but you're right. You are beautiful. Hold your head high and try not to listen to the negativity. If you ever want to talk to my Mom her name on Facebook is Jeanine Wilcox Thompson.

@Sara Thank you for your input. Hearing stories like that keep me on the right track. The diet industry is sick and unfair. False advertising is illegal. I don't know how they get away with it.

  4. I completely agree with what you said about Sara Rue and Kim Kardashian because I believe that full-figured women should be proud of their bodies regardless of the size of their jeans. I believe that full-figured women can be healthy, sexy and fit without losing a massive amount of weight. God made us this way for a reason and we need to cherish it. I think that full-figured women need to do triathlons and running races to prove to themselves that they can do something with their bodies besides starving it.

  5. I complete agree with you Whitney. I just saw that commercial with Sara Rue and I said the exact same thing before I even read this. I have a close friend who has been killing herself to lose weight she has gained. I've tried to explain to her how much more beautiful she is with the weight. It fills out her face so much more. The Greeks idolized women with healthy, full bodies, enough to model their Goddesses with them. I'm perfectly fine with having a body that resembles a Greek goddess more than a stick figure. I'm proud of you Whitney for being a great example in the public eye.

  6. I loved reading this. It drives me crazy to see the same already stick thin models gain and lose "5lbs in 5 days" b.s.from the tabloids.

I am glad I will never have to read about you in those superficial stories.

PS. I'm also from Atlantic Beach and graduated from Fletcher in 03. I was routing for you through out cycle 10. I am also curvy, 5'11 and a 16. I literally screamed when you won. :D

PPS. Jennifer Hudson is with Weight Watchers.
